LETTERS TO MY DAUGHTER
Today, the day dawned with an ugly weather, like rain, a wind colder than yesterday, a sky covered with dark clouds. It looks like we’re going to have a rainy day. It doesn’t even look like Christmas Eve. Because on Christmas Eve it should be a beautiful day, don’t you think? Isn’t it true that people are happier at Christmas? So, there is no reason why the day is sad. The day before Christmas should be joyful as everyone should be joyful on Christmas Eve. If they are not happy, how can they welcome Santa Claus with smiles, Christmas music, tropical and oriental fruits and effusive hugs? If they are not happy, how can they exchange gifts, celebrate supper and drink sparkling wine? But it seems that today, Ju, the day will be ugly, the weather will be ugly and, I’m afraid, Christmas could also be ugly.
What will an ugly Christmas be like? It is not very difficult to imagine a Christmas without beauty and without joy. It is enough that we leave aside the thought of what our Christmas is like, year after year, as a family, to imagine a day like all the others, with the difference of being Christmas, too, for those who have no family.
For those who do not have a family, Christmas day dawns, happens and falls simply as a day like all other days, of a life lived without a family. Upon waking up, for those who have no family, it makes no difference whether the day is clear or not, whether the sky is blue or dark with clouds. Whether it rains or not, the only noticeable difference is whether or not it is wet. As for the rest, the day is always a day like the others, even if it’s Christmas.
For those who have no family, it doesn’t matter if the stores are full or empty of customers, prices are cheap or expensive, there is to be no burning and sale of stocks, national or imported products, promotions, discounts, gifts or prize draws through coupons , advertisements on pamphlets, newspapers, magazines or billboards.
For those who do not have a family, a kilo of nuts is a kilo of nothing, with no one to share on Christmas Eve or during supper, which is also not supper because it will not exist. And panettone, a cake that is prepared only for Christmas, has no meaning, for those who have no family, even though it originated in Milan, in Northern Italy, more than a thousand years ago. For those who do not have a family, it is as good to make one as to be a thousand years old.
For those who have no family, Juliana, there is no bond of feelings that connects them to someone in a more intimate way. There are friends, some friends, a few, because life seems shorter for those who are not in family and does not allow them to snatch many. The loves, then, are scarcer, in lesser number and quantity, and even the quality never counts, because, for those without family, no love they had remained long enough to become a family.
Today, the day dawned with an ugly weather, like rain, a wind colder than yesterday, a sky covered with dark clouds. And I, while watching the sky through my bedroom window, imagine how different and good and beautiful that day would be if you were here, with your family.
Daddy’s longing kisses
